With so many Italian reds in the $8.95 range it would be a shame not to do some exploring. Such as with this pair.
If you enjoy a frank, traditional character, look for Cusumano’s Nero D’Avola. Not dolled up, not smooth, not spicy sweet ““ it feels real. Dry, medium bodied, it’s the perfect partner for everyday meals. More “˜at table’ than for parties.
Fans of plummy, smooth, Merlot-style rich reds will enjoy Negroamaro from Mezzomondo in Puglia. However, being Italian, it feels a shade drier than Merlots from hot climates. I could even drink this stuff.
MEZZOMONDO 14 Negroamaro, Puglia, Italy 588962 $8.95
CUSUMANO 14 Nero D’Avola, Sicily 143164 $9.95
