Small is Cool!

Without a doubt, I am a condiment queen, and my refrigerator is a valued appliance. In Portugal we have a very small refrigerator – about the size of what Canadians would consider to be a bar fridge.

Yes, it took me by surprise, but I have grown to love and appreciate it. It keeps me more in the moment – and puts a bit of control on the condiment situ. How many mustards can one girl have at a time anyhow? In hindsight, I think maybe refrigerators are a bit over the top in North America, just like many cars. Is it really necessary?

Our refrigerator occupies just a little space, and is next door to a similar size freezer. Those, and the other appliances (dishwasher and washing machine) quietly share the same amount of space, and it makes for a tidy, minimalist kitchen. Electricity is expensive in Portugal, and our small refrigerator keeps that precious utility in check. Most importantly, it encourages us to shop every day, or every few days. As a result, our daily routine involves a good walk to the grocery store, market or the amazing organic farm, Maria Flaminga.

Having a small fridge has increased my awareness of what we have and what we desire. We know everything that is in it. Small can be beautiful. Simple pleasures, simple life. Happy wife!
