For me the Holy Grail of red wine is not Shiraz but Cotes du Rhone, which are mainly crafted from the Grenache grape. These wines deliver enough richness to be yummy but they also have other essential qualities such as refreshment, vitality and an earthy realness that suggests their Mediterranean home. But the Grenache grape is not exclusive to the Rhone, it’s widely planted next door in the north of Spain and I’m delighted to see more and more wineries putting it front and centre on the label.
You may be familiar with Las Rocas from Vintages but if not you’re in for a treat. Shades of New World in richness and concentration but also feels earthy. Best feature is the brightness of the flavours which give the wine an sassy, Latino buzz. For maximum enjoyment sip from a huge glass. As with all Rhone-style wines, it works well with most foods and moments.
