Successful wine brands are usually crowd-pleasers but South Africa’s Roodeberg is the exception. For me, this red works in much the same way as Guinness ““ appealing to those who enjoy character, a bit of a challenge. And not the slightest concession to popular taste. The new vintage of Roodeberg is seriously dry and rustic ““ shades of an earthy Barbera, or a southern Italian red. Of course there’s a little South Africa smokiness. Think burger, ragout pasta, or wings.
