Today’s fondness for non-oaked Chardonnay is a throw back to a few decades ago when white wines were a lot simpler. A lot more plain. We need plain again today to balance all the glitz in our world. Plain as a way of turning down the volume, of chilling. And for some, plain is all they can handle.
Pinot Grigio is the current champion of plain, but non-oaked Chardonnay is catching up. While there is not a huge difference in these wines, Chardonnay is usually on the smooth side (golden delicious apple) while PG ltends to the lively, crunchy (as in green apple).
