Library Love

It was not too long ago when everyone thought that the day was over for libraries. Who needs a boring old institute when everything is online – without having to leave the house. But look how wrong we were. Libraries have been transformed and are now the social and creative centre of towns. Happening spots. At least the ones I know, such as in Picton, Ontario and in Kinsale, Ireland. And here in Tavira.

My first reason for loving our library is the architecture. An old jail has been given a modern feeling with a corten steel (aka rust) entrance and a water garden. Edgy meets contemplative. An art gallery/lecture hall and a kid’s space complete the attractions. No, there’s also an espresso bar – we are in Europe. While I often take advantage of a big library table for work projects, sitting in the garden is my favourite. In some seasons I choose a spot to enjoy the blaze of orange flowers on the trumpet vine. And when what’s not blooming, I get close to the turtles. They are masters at doing nothing. For hours. I’m working on taking their lead.

Our library is named after someone who never existed. Alvaro de Campos was one of Fernando Pessoa’s characters – born in Tavira, supposedly! Not only is our library named after a fictional character, but we have an Alvaro de Campos festival. Crazy! So much to enjoy in a boring old library!!!
