For me Barbera is one of the last, pure expressions in red wine. As in a drink designed to invigorate the palate and prepare it for food. And to keep the palate stimulated throughout the meal. With the advent of red wine as a party drink (thanks to Shiraz) and as a hedonistic indulgence (thanks to California) the number of traditional gusty food wines has become limited. Barbera to the rescue.
The Mood for this wine: The need for an invigorating red for pasta or burger night. And Italian gusto!
