We all have wines that gives us comfort for some reason or other. Maybe because they’re connected to a fond memory, or a discovery that put a new shine on life. Or they have been reliable companions for decades. When I first thought what would be my pick, I had to pause as I immediately though of richness – not my favourite characteristic. After a quick mental flick through my repertoire of reds I did spot a candidate – Cotes du Rhone. Richness beautifully disguised as charm. And thoughts of the south of France – what could be more comforting? Add an herb-roasted chicken for a five-star dose of comfort. May I suggest a second bottle at the ready – comfort works best in large doses. Lightly chill this wine, of course.
