Okay this is not a cheapie, but it is on sale! And comes in a screw cap. I’ve been drinking Cave’s Gamay ever since the winery opened and have to say it’s been an wonderful ride. Early vintages had the fruitiness/tartness of Beaujolais, and I recall a chefs’ lunch where it was pronounced ‘best partner for alfresco meals’. More recent vintages have become earthy/tangy/bitter and Barbera-ish in feeling – which is a common trait in Niagara Gamay. The 2013 vintage is certainly in the Italian camp – not for wimps. Excellent partner for pizza, pork loin or poulet. Fantastic with burger too. Now in handy screw-cap. Get some, and don’t forget to lightly chill.
