Of late I’ve disappointed with many reds in the popular super-rich category. So many wines tasted doctored – think candied/confected in the same way as fast food. I have not wanted a second glass of many wines with 90–93 Parker scores. For the life of me I cannot understand why prestigious ‘wine experts’ keep promoting these ‘processed’ wines.
When looking for rich reds that taste more ‘real’, I usually have better luck with the south of France. Such as this Rhone and Roussillon.
Xavier Cotes du Rhone delivers a pure red wine expression with delicious ripe grape flavours. Along with the classic ‘wild bush’, herbal flavours of the region. Feels real, nothing concocted. There’s even an elegant feeling to the richness.
Charm abounds at Gerard Bertrand’s winery – there’s art, jazz at the restaurant and lots of festivities in the courtyard. Very South of France. This spirit comes through in the wines as you’ll discover in this blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. Feel the sun, the wild herbs, and the good-life. Very comforting on a cold, Canadian night.
